Contact Appropriations Committee on Health Care

Two important health care issues will be voted on by the Appropriations Committee this month. If your Senator or Representative is on the Appropriations Committee, contact him/her. If not, contact the Co-Chairs, Rep. Toni Walker and Sen. Cathy Osten. Urge legislators to:

  • Preserve Medicaid/HUSKY and the Medicare Savings Program

  • Pass HB 7267 or SB 134, Concerning Public Health Care Options in Connecticut, to establish new insurance options for (1) small businesses and nonprofits and (2) individuals buying on the private market

  • If possible, personalize your message by explaining why health care is important to you.

Fact Sheet on these two issues here.

  • Medicaid/HUSKY: The Committee is working on a budget proposal that should be voted on by May 3. The Governor did not propose major cuts to HUSKY/Medicaid. But The Governor’s budget relied on revenue proposals that the legislature is unlikely to adopt. The Committee may propose cuts to HUSKY to balance the budget.

The Governor did propose an asset test for the Medicare Savings Program (MSP). 18,000 seniors and people with disabilities could lose access to MSP if the proposed asset test is adopted.

  • Public Insurance Option: HB 7267 and SB 134 (identical bills) have been approved by the Insurance and Real Estate Committee and will be referred to the Appropriations Committee for action in the next two weeks. These bills would provide new, affordable quality health care options for Connecticut, relying on the purchasing power of the state to lower prices.
